TREKKING IN NEPAL
|
ITINERARY W06 – ANNAPURNA CIRCUITThis area in the west of the country is one of the best trekking areas in Nepal. The start point of the trek is at 750 m. (2460 ft.) above sea level and the destination point is at 5415 m. (17,765 ft.) Every day the scenery changes as you trek through terraced fields, villages and forests. The local people you will meet may be Gurung, Magar, Brahman or Sherpa, with some Tibetans also, and the religions practised will be mainly Hinduism and Buddhism. There are marvellous views all the way, and the visible peaks include those of the Manaslu, Lamjung, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The summit of the trek is at the Thorong La Pass (5415 m., 17,765 ft.), after which you descend to the township of Muktinath. Muktinath is a very important place for Hindus, perhaps the most sacred Hindu site in Nepal, and every year in September the Yartung festival takes place here, when pilgrims come from all over India and Nepal, and even from further afield. An eternal flame of natural gas burns inside the Hindu temple here. Along the way you will see many monasteries and temples, and you will also be able to visit a school and talk with students and teachers. All the people are very friendly, and in some places they invite you to join them in song and dance. Near the end of the trek you come to the hot spring at Tatopani. This is a wonderful place to have a bath. Two days before you reach your final destination, you reach Ghorepani, where you stay overnight. The following morning before dawn you climb Poon Hill, a very popular spot for its fantastic views of the sun rising (or setting) over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. At the end of the trek you go to Pokhara, Nepal's second city and its most beautiful, with its lakes, mountains and green hills. I hope you're ready, because I'm waiting to take you there!
