TREKKING IN NEPAL
|
ITINERARY E02 – EVEREST BASE CAMPIn Nepal there are many domestic flights, but the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is one of the most spectacular, with amazing views of the Everest range. From Lukla you trek to Namche for the first close-up view of Everest from the ground. At 3,440 metres Namche is quite high but there are all kinds of facilities here, including internet cafés. From Namche all the way up to Everest Base Camp there are marvellous views as you are so close to the mountains. You can learn a great deal about Sherpa culture, education and religion by visiting families, schools and monasteries. Because this area lies within the Sagarmatha National Park, no-one is allowed to disturb the wildlife, plants and flowers. ("Sagarmatha" is the Nepali name for Mount Everest and means "Goddess of the sky".) From Laboche you walk up the Khumbu glacier, the biggest glacier in Nepal, till you arrive at Base Camp, just below the Khumbu ice fall. If you want, you can do an extra three hours' walk from Gorakhsep to the top of Kalapathar at 5543 metres. From here you get the best possible view of Everest, but you do not need to decide whether you want to make this climb until you get to Gorakhsep.
