TREKKING IN NEPAL
|
ITINERARY W02 – POON HILLThis is a short and easy trek starting from Pokhara, Nepal's second city, and perhaps its most beautiful. It is one of the best routes in Nepal for all ages. You go by bus to Nayapul, from where you trek up through green fields of rice, buckwheat and millet to Ghorepani. From Ghorepani you can do an early morning climb to the top of Poon Hill, from where there are marvellous views of the sun rising over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges (Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna 1,2,South and Hiunchuli, Lamjung, Manaslu...). "Poon" is the name of one of the local clans. Other local groups include Magar and Gurung. This is also a top area for recruitment of gurkhas to the British and Indian Armies. You have the opportunity to visit villages and schools, to talk with the children and teachers and to learn more about the local culture. You will find the local people very friendly. Depending on the season, you may see many flowers, including of course the rhododendron in spring.
